but srsly blackgaze

my personal album of the year

House vs. Hurricane - Perspectives

I spent about 2200 minutes listening to this album over the last 12-months.

i wish i knew how i could describe this.

I've always known this band had a sound that appeals to a younger audience. For me hardcore was the 2nd last stepping stone into the world of music. I started listening to punk in grade 9, to hardcore in grade 10, and metal starting around grade 11. I listened to A LOT of metal over the next few years. That was my first foundation into a specific genre. Eventually I started to branch off into a lot of different tastes. Since then i haven't stopped discovering new music. Last year i can remember getting back into hardcore. Listening to all the stuff i used to, and finding new stuff progressively. So I love hardcore, what can i say.

This album is a post-hardcore album. It's very original. All i can pick out is the styles of music they borrow from it. The way the keyboards work with the music is something i haven't heard done this well by people so young. they keys are very trancelike voices, which is pretty widely used by other bands which might be classified as the same genre (i won't get into that right now). The songs are pretty much all exceptionally written.

I wouldn't even recommend this to anyone because it was perfect for me. well in reality i also don't think anyone would really like them.

album of the year honorable mention

Merchant Ships - For Cameron

screamo with a midwest feel (cleaner/mathier guitars and shouting/yelling/group vocals). their older stuff is even more midwest oriented, but this album has a great balance between the two.

GOOD FUCKING STUFF! it makes me be happy to be alive.

album of the year honorable mention runner up

The Seven Fields of Aphelion - Periphery
nice ambient album. modern, and sounds like it was made by someone who likes pretty indie music.

Dead Elizabeth

i downloaded this album in october 2004. at the time i tagged the genre as ‘black metalcore’. i would say now that this is an early form of modern deathcore.

23rd birthday meal #1

sloppy joes and caeser salad

the beef in the sloppy joes seems a bit dry, maybe my father used more than the amount he was supposed to. i ate two, he had 2, and i think there is enough leftovers for two more.

i didn’t have any caeser salad until after 11pm. i don’t really have any complaints. bacon bits were left out to make it vegetarian accessible, and melba toast was added to supplement the croutons.

all in all it was a pretty solid choice for my first birthday meal, and i would have again!

sky of harmony

i still wait
standing on the hill
like a beacon at sea
my body in harmony
benevolence cast upon thee

scouring the horizon
in search of the great tree
piercing the sky
the final journey, this will be for me
